4th Posting - Montevideo, Uruguay

Our last port of call on our 7-day cruise portion of the tour was Montevideo, capital of Uruguay.
It is a lovely, old colonial city, with a wide range of architecture and lots of parks, fountains, and beaches.

Cathedral Square Fountain

Montevideo Cathedral

The front of the Cathedral had a lovely violet color on the walls.

Artiga Monument and Square, honoring the hero of the Uruguay Independence Revolution.

We visited the Gaucho (Cowboy) Museum. The Uruguay economy is based on cattle, and there are a lot of similarities between the Gaucho here and the western US cowboy.

Bronze of a Gaucho

The Gaucho Museum was in an exquisite building with lots of marble.

This photo is taken standing inside the doorway of the Gaucho Museum, looking across the street at a modern, glass building, which is reflecting the Gaucho Museum in the windows.

Uruguay Parliament

Pioneer Monument - The rear wheels appear to be sunken, to reflect the hardships the pioneers faced.

The meat market is a large building with many restaurants specializing in the beef and other specialties of Uruguay. You select from the assortment and they put it on the grill for you. Notice the live flame directly behind the meat.

This shows the menu, the selection of meats, and the grill.

This man is soliciting business for the restaurant with a bottle of "Medio Medio" (half champagne and half white wine) and a tray of big, juicy steaks!
